Just Me – A Mothers Day Dedication

J

Just Me.

My mother had the same greeting on every call on the telephone – whether she called you or you called her. She said, when asked who is it, or without even being asked, Hi, it’s just me. My husband named my mother “just me.” Just Me was the kindest woman I knew. As I remember Just Me right now in this moment, I remember what was behind her words as she spoke. This is our story.

I was raised by a sacred medicine woman. Her name was Just Me. She was the matriarch of our tribe. Just Me was beautiful in both her youth and wise years. She wore smiles and shining eyes that saw everything clearly. Just Me was an Animal Whisperer. Our herd of canine and feline and bird and fish and turtle were nourished and lived to happy old age under her beloved gaze and care. Just Me tended to an African Violet garden. Just me taught me patience in tending to the fuzzy leaves just right to bring out their lunch beautiful purple flowers.

Just me was a master tracker. When food was in short supply Just Me could assure every one of us was fed. Just Me ventured into the markets and returned with more smiles and treats. She scheduled life from sun up to sun down to be smooth and carefree. Yearly we would take long treks into the woods, living for weeks. I would go fishing for sea bass in the dawn hours with King Sol while she tended to the fire and cleared the way for the mischievous children and the beloved canine to not get too lost. When King Sol and I returned with the bigger than usual Sea Bass, she congratulated us (knowing we stopped and bought it at from the merchant some of the time) coaxing the story of the great catch and honoring King Sol with her own mischievous sparkling eyes.

Just Me was a master bargain hunter and gatherer. She could see the inner value beyond the maya of outer appearances, and return home with goods and riches for us to enjoy. Just Me discovered many treasures among lost items and had an eye for the true value of everything.

The beauty and magic of Just Me is with me forever. As Master Tracker, Master Hunter and Gatherer, Master Animal Whisperer, Master of the African Violet, Just Me remained kind and humble and enjoyed bringing fun to everyone and everything.

The mastery of Just Me is not lost on me today. Just Me’s mastery was a profound and powerful spiritual mastery. In every angry moment, every difficult situation, and every uneasy silence Just Me found the quiet spot and stood there so I could see my way to that place.

I pray to and honor Just Me, my beloved Mother and Cosmic Guide, in gratitude for the place she guides me to in every moment of my life. I am in that quiet place, within the center of all worldly things, within the center of all confusion; that is kind, compassionate, and filled with elegance and love and clarity.
